Pushing Boundaries

Agency Details:

Pushing Boundaries
Logo

Pushing Boundaries is a community of people working together toward the same mission: providing intensive exercise therapy that strengthens and supports people living with paralysis, and their families, to maximize health and improve quality of life. In the same way, we must all work together to realize our envisioned future: to be the Pacific Northwest's premier intensive exercise therapy center that will be supported by an endowment, specialized staff and strategic partnerships.

Description:
Pushing Boundaries is a non-profit organization that provides intensive exercise therapy for those suffering from injury or disease resulting in paralysis. Clients participate in two or three day-a-week exercise programs with staff educated in Exercise Science and personal training. These therapists utilize their knowledge in athletics to increase movement and stability.

History:
Seven years ago, a local businessman Allan Northrup sustained a C7-T1 spinal cord injury in an automobile accident Thanksgiving weekend.

Shortly after his acute rehab, he participated in an intensive exercise program for 2 years in southern California. Upon his return to Washington he wanted to continue exercising. After he and his wife filled two rooms of their home with specialized fitness equipment they opened a non-profit paralysis rehabilitation center in April of 2005.

In a few short years Pushing Boundaries has seen tremendous growth. Today, they work with clients ranging in age 11 to 79, suffering from SCI, Stroke, MS, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Devic’s, TBI, and other neurological conditions resulting in paralysis.

Pushing Boundaries continues to give those living with paralysis the opportunity to push the boundaries that have been forced upon them and allow them to get stronger, more independent, and to share ideas with others who are in similar situations.

The organization serves the Puget Sound community from its Redmond location. Pushing Boundaries is funded by it's clients, private donations, corporations and foundations. The therapy center is outfitted with state of the art exercise equipment and a team of committed exercise therapists. Pushing Boundaries continues to grow and develop its clients, equipment, and rehabilitation programs finding new ways to help those in the recovery process.
