Description:
Seattle Police Department’s Domestic Violence Victim Support Team (VST) program is a unique partnership between community members and police to address and prevent domestic violence. The program is designed to address the gap in services to domestic violence victims that exists between the time patrol officers respond to a 9-1-1 call and take a report, to the time advocates, detectives, and prosecutors make contact with the victim for follow up. Community volunteers with VST provide crisis intervention, support, and resources to domestic violence victims and their children at secured crime scenes during the critical time following a domestic violence incident. Please visit our website for more information about the hours of operation and the basic requirements for becoming a volunteer.
History:
A first pilot of the Victim Support Team operated in Seattle Police Department’s East Precinct, from July to December 1997. Starting in May 1998, the Victim Support Team Program expanded to respond to domestic violence calls in both the East and South Precincts. In January 2002, the Victim Support Team expanded to the North and West Precincts, serving the entire city of Seattle. The VST Program currently has two staff members (the VST Volunteer Supervisor and the VST Program Manager), two JustServe AmeriCorps volunteers, and over 70 community volunteers. The VST Program is supervised by Seattle Police Department’s Domestic Violence Unit, and was developed through the collaborative efforts of the VST Criminal Justice System Planning Team and Community Advisory Board.
