Agency Details:
Washington Reading Corps - Beacon Hill International Elementary
The mission of the Washington Reading Corps is to improve reading abilities of K-6 students across Washington State. This is achieved through research-based tutoring of struggling readers and effective collaborations among schools, families, community members, National Service, businesses and state partners.
Description:
The Washington Reading Corps blends public, private, and community resources to encourage early childhood development and support struggling readers in kindergarten through sixth grade. Initially created in response to the state’s low reading scores, the Washington Reading Corps now serves a critical role as an intervention to address reading achievement goals of the No Child Left Behind Act.
History:
The Washington Reading Corps is a statewide service program started in 1998 as a partnership between the Governor's Office, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the Washington Services Corps Americorps Programs. Solid Ground contracts with the Washington Service Corps to recruit, train and supervise the full-time AmeriCorps members and VISTA volunteers assigned to work in Reading Corps schools. In turn, the AmeriCorps members and VISTA volunteers help recruit and train community volunteers and provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring for students.
