Camp Korey
The mission of Camp Korey is to honor the courage, strength, and determination that children and their families endure while battling life threatening and serious illnesses; and to provide a safe, friendly, and medically sound environment for them to just have fun and be kids.
Description:
Camp Korey is a non-profit camp in the state of Washington offering programs to children, young adults and families affected by life-threatening and serious illnesses. Camp Korey provides a space for children to experience the joys and wonders of childhood outside the confines of a hospital examining room. The Camp is designed to help children regain a sense of self, normalcy, and the feeling that for them, there are no limits. Drawing from the Pacific Northwest and beyond, Camp Korey provides unique services not previously offered in the area before. Through the support of our donors, Camp Korey is free of charge.
History:
Camp Korey is founded by Tim and Donna Rose, whose efforts are supported by co-founders Jim Hebert and the Seattle Sonics and Storm Foundation. Tim and Donna Rose lost their 18 year old son, Korey, in 2004 to osteo-sarcoma. The inspiration to build the Camp came from the realization that their situation was not isolated and there are thousands of children and families who experience the impact of serious and chronic conditions.
Camp Korey has completed an independent needs assessment for the region, which determined that there are over 30,000 children in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, between the age of six and sixteen, with medical profiles who can benefit from this special experience and make them eligible for Camp Korey’s program. The scope of the needs assessment included conditions such as; asthma, arthritis, cancer, epilepsy, hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, sickle cell anemia, Crohn’s & Colitis, cardiovascular disease, HIV/AIDS, and other serious conditions. Of the total 30,000 children, there are less than 3,500 currently attending camps of any kind.
