Get Your Guts In Gear, Inc.
GYGIG is an independent, national, nonprofit organization that raises awareness of Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and related conditions through multi-day cycling events that benefit and support IBD organizations and patient advocacy groups. GYGIG creates and produces well-organized, participant-centric events so that participants feel empowered, accomplished and part of a greater community
Description:
GYGIG annually produces and hosts several multi-day cycling events throughout the country. A primary objective is to benefit and support several IBD organizations and patient advocacy groups, in addition to the participants themselves. In so doing, GYGIG Rides provide a far greater service, as each year a venue is created that allows a diverse group of people to come together in a conducive environment that fosters empowerment, accomplishment, education and a sense of community for the participants, who may be afflicted with or know someone afflicted with an IBD-related condition. Cyclists include both experienced and novice riders. The cyclists are supported by a large team of volunteers known as crew members, who participate in all three days of each Ride and who are an integral part of the Ride community. These unique Rides satisfy the needs of a community looking to relate to one another and share concerns and common experiences of living with an IBD condition, while simultaneously providing a fun and relaxed environment. It is this unique aspect of the Rides that gives GYGIG a distinct, competitive advantage in the IBD world. In essence, it is GYGIG’s goal to serve as a conduit in the IBD community between the community itself and the organizations, which support and fund research and patient advocacy.
History:
Founded in August 2003, GYGIG hosted its first 3-day, 210-mile Ride in the summer of 2004 from New York City to Saratoga Springs, New York. Within three years of its founding, GYGIG began hosting a second annual Ride in the Pacific Northwest, originating in Seattle, Washington. In 2007, GYGIG hosted three multi-day Rides around the country, with Central Texas serving as the newest Ride addition. GYGIG continues to create and host three multi-day Rides in 2009, substituting the Midwest for the Texas location. GYGIG strategically selects its Ride locations based upon strong local and community support, as well as beneficiary chapter and corporate sponsorship support.
With its first Ride, GYGIG’s fundraising efforts benefited four IBD-related organizations. In 2006, GYGIG added another IBD organization to its designated beneficiaries. Today, in addition to supporting its own charitable activities, GYGIG has maintained its support of four outside organizations through Ride fundraising and corporate sponsorship. Since its founding in 2003, GYGIG has raised over $1.25 million in proceeds to support the empowerment, research, awareness and advocacy efforts for people with IBD and ostomies. It is GYGIG’s goal to continue hosting more annual, multi-day Rides throughout the country with the hopes of being able to support and reach more IBD-related organizations.
