Look Listen And Learn
Look, Listen and Learn promotes early learning and school preparedness for all children in King County, especially those who are at the greatest risk of not succeeding in school. Accessible to all families via local commercial-free TV stations, this preschool-targeted educational children's television show utilizes the latest brain development research in connecting children and families with local early learning resources, programs and venues. Look for us on King County educational, public and government TV stations beginning in fall 2009.
Description:
Look, Listen and Learn will pioneer early-learning programming on King County public, educational and government TV stations where we will have the exclusive ability to air episodes multiple times throughout the day.
Look, Listen and Learn will use the latest brain development research to inspire learning, creativity and cognitive development.
Look, Listen and Learn is available via commercial-free stations that all families can access. Using television as a vehicle to promote early learning objectives means that the latest research is available to everyone, most especially children in our community ages 3 – 6.
Through the implementation of the Washington State Early Learning Benchmark Learning Objectives, each thirty-minute program will have a theme, such as friendship or manners. Children will see a series of segments (arts and crafts, story time, cooking, etc.) that will demonstrate language, problem solving skills, vocabulary, math and more. The show combines puppetry, animation and music to achieve its mission of inspiring early learning and school readiness. Look, Listen and Learn works with a team of local early childhood experts to ensure that each episode meets these objectives.
History:
Val Thomas-Matson, founder of Look, Listen and Learn, holds more than two decades of experience in television and community advocacy. She worked for 15 years as a King County community organizer and also hosted 'Communities in Action,' a monthly public affairs television program that aired for three years on King County’s government channel. Her broadcast career started at 1981 at King Broadcasting. She worked on 'Flash,' a teen show on King 5 as a segment producer. She also interned for 'Boomerang,' a children's television show which aired on KOMO.
Thomas-Matson hosts Look, Listen and Learn as Auntie Lena. Her sidekick is a puppet, Possum, played by a Thistle Theatre hand puppeteer who is educated in early childhood development. Thomas-Matson also leads a dedicated creative and production team devoted to furthering the mission of Look, Listen and Learn. The show is taped on location at local venues such as the Seattle Children’s Museum and neighborhood libraries.
