Black Diamond Community Center
The Black Diamond Community Center provides social, recreational, and emergency assistance programs for seniors, families, and youth in the greater Black Diamond area. We have three sites for our programs: the community center, the community gym and the childcare facility. Our vision is to provide community needs locally with local donations and volunteerism.
Description:
The Black Diamond Community Center provides a variety of programs, including the following. Youth programs: Before and After School Kids Care (BASK) for K-5th grade (full-time in summer months); Creative Movement and Dance program for ages 3-11; Open Gym Basketball Nights; "Get on Track" drug and alcohol counseling for teens (GOT); "Share the Joy" Christmas gift program; "Running Start" school supplies program; and a variety of other youth programs for the youth in our area. Seniors: We are a senior lunch program site, in partnership with Catholic Community Services. Our senior program offers transportation on Thursdays, health and recreational programs, foot care services, field trips, and educational opportunities. We provide Adult Respite Care once a week, and coordinate Meals on Wheels delivery for our area. Families: The Center provides assistance Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm. We have an emergency food and clothing bank, furniture and household essentials. We have Salvation Army vouchers for Puget Sound Energy shut-off notices, rental assistance to prevent eviction, and gas for medical appointments and job interviews. The Center hosts various community events such as the Easter Breakfast, Family Resource Night, Christmas and other special events. AA meetings on Monday evenings 7-9pm and Wednesdays 6:30-8pm. We serve primarily low-income and poverty-level clients for these programs, which are documented by registrations and sign-ins.
History:
Our 501c3 status was granted in 1988. The Community Center started as a food bank in 1977 and purchased the building where we are in 1990. Judith Black has been the Executive Director since 1995. The agency is a designated disaster center with a 38kw generator to enable us to provide a safe haven during a disaster. We are also an American Red Cross disaster supply center with a Red Cross storage building on-site, housing 800 cots and comfort kits and other disaster supplies.
