Lake Wilderness Arboretum Foundation
The Lake Wilderness Arboretum Foundation mission is to develop and maintain the arboretum with a native plant focus, establish educational programs, collect and propagate plants and establish an interpretive center.
Description:
The Lake Wilderness Arboretum Foundation is a volunteer organization that develops and maintains the Lake Wilderness Arboretum which consists of 42 acres adjacent to Lake Wilderness Park in Maple Valley. Over 8000 hours have been logged each of the past 3 years by our volunteers. The arboretum is a quiet retreat and an outdoor classroom. It features trails meandering through native forest, display gardens and a nursery used for plant propagation and study. The Foundation provides many educational opportunities with classes ranging from ethnobotany, to grafting and plant propagation, to concrete leaf casting. Local schools, from elementary to community college level, use the arboretum as a resource, coming by bus (which the foundation sometimes funds) or walking along the trail. Scouts also come to the arboretum to do their Eagle Scout projects or to earn badges. Community involvement is high and the arboretum is treasured as a beautiful green space within a growing urban area.
History:
The Lake Wilderness Arboretum Foundation, formerly the South King County Arboretum Foundation, is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization founded in 1965. In 1997, the arboretum began to acquire the Smith-Mossman Western Azalea collection, which is the largest public collection of Rhododendron occidentale in the world.
