Consejo is a private, not for profit organization, founded in 1978 to provide culturally competent mental health and family support services in Western Washington. Our services focus on, but are not limited to the Hispanic/Latino community. Consejo is committed to providing education, prevention, treatment and support services related to mental health, substance abuse and domestic violence. Consejo also provides vocational rehabilitation services and employment services to Latinos living in the King County area. Consejo also operates two transitional housing programs, one for homeless/mentally ill patients and the other one for victims of domestic violence.

Consejo is a private non-profit organization founded in 1978 to provide culturally competent mental health and family support services in Western and Eastern Washington. Our services focus on, but are not limited to, the Hispanic/Latino community. Consejo is committed to providing education, prevention, treatment and support services related to mental health, substance abuse and domestic violence. Consejo also provides vocational rehabilitation services and employment services to Latinos living in the King County area. Consejo also operates two transitional housing programs, one for homeless/mentally ill patients and the other for victims of domestic violence. Consejo's clientele is approximately 95% Spanish-speaking. Today services are offered to residents of Seattle and King County from our main offices in Columbia City and satellite offices in Bellevue, Kent, Federal Way, South Park, Yakima and Tri-Cities. Consejo largely serves poor Hispanic/Latino families and individuals throughout the greater Seattle area. The services are provided to elders, adults, youth, and children. We use an interdependent treatment model in which clients feel accepted and emotionally secure, experience personal growth, and develop new skills. This model empowers clients to participate in the community at their highest level of functioning. Consejo has recognized that domestic violence is a problem that has to be addressed. This program will respond to this problem by providing services to victims of domestic violence in the Latino/Hispanic community. We believe that in order to address this problem adequately, victims require a culturally competent and sensitive approach.

History:
Consejo was funded back on 1978 to serve Latinos in the King County area. In 1988 consejo funded Las Brisas Transitional Housing Program for mentally ill Latino clients. Consejo started providing domestic violence services in 1988 as well. In 1998 Consejo open the first transitional housing program for Latino women and their children victims of domestic violence. In 1996 Consejo opens the Teen/Family Advocacy and Outreach Program. In 2001 the domestic violence program expanded to Eastern Washington with offices in Granger and Tri-Cities. In 2004 Consejo provides Human Trafficking Services in Eastern Washington. Currently Consejo is in the process to open a second transitional housing program for women and their children victims of domestic violence. This program is expected to open on February 2007.
