Meridian Park School

Agency Details:

Meridian Park School

We believe the best learning occurs in an environment that is emotionally and physically safe--one in which students, staff, and families collaborate to promote an appreciation of diversity, positive interdependence, intellectual curiosity, high individual social and academic expectations, and a passion for life.

Description:
Meridian Park is a neighborhood school and a lot more. At our school you will find students as young as three years old with a variety of developmental challenges from hearing, vision or speech loss to autism, cerebral palsy and behavioral issues. Our dedicated Early Childhood staff works with these students through age five (kindergarten) to prepare them to enter the regular classroom. Also housed in our school is an elementary Highly Capable Program which teaches students who test in the top 3% of the population.

Meridian Park School has a total student population of 711 children. It includes a comprehensive elementary school with grades K-6. It has 40% minority students and 29% of students on the free and reduced lunch program.

Meeting the needs of our diverse population of students provides many opportunities for volunteers. On any day you will find volunteers tutoring and mentoring students in the regular classrooms, leading children on science or art field trips, helping students acquire the English language, or reading to children under the age of five. Check out our volunteer opportunities to see if one fits you.

History:
Our school was originally built in 1958 as a junior high school. It was remodeled in 1995. In addition to our neighborhood students, Meridian Park, as mentioned, is home to several special programs such as Early Childhood Education, Highly Capable and English Language Learners (ELL). The Shoreline School District also houses its Occupational and Physical Therapy staff and facilities at Meridian Park School. The school will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2008.
