Mass Care Shelter Associate Featured Opportunities Basic Needs

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on October 12, 2009

Are you interested in assisting with relief for local disasters? Help support your community during times of need.

By receiving training now, you can be a very valuable asset to our community when these emergencies arrive. Your local American Red Cross serving King and Kitsap Counties provides immediate assistance in times of disaster.

We are looking for flexible, independent volunteers to help out in surge-capacity disaster-relief situations, typically from 0-5 times a year. This is a great position for someone who is interested in disaster-relief work but who cannot commit to a regular schedule throughout the year.

Disaster Shelter workers must have strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to empathize with others as well as to handle stressful/ emotional situations during long shifts.

Your position may include:

Assisting with all aspects of running an emergency disaster-relief shelter for displaced clients, including:

  • Cooking for large groups
  • Referring clients to both internal and external agencies
  • Helping register clients at the shelter
  • Helping with day-to-day issues and needs as they arise at the shelter

Work together with talented staff and volunteers, and feel the satisfaction of knowing that what you're are doing really matters.

All Disaster Shelter workers receive extensive training free of charge, including First Aid/ CPR, and a Shelter Operations and Simulation workshop.

In addition to being on the front line of a larger-scale disaster, the ability to listen and provide empathetic care to displaced clients is a key characteristic for Disaster Shelter Workers.

Lastly, this position requires the ability to respond to staffing needs in two hours or less, with shifts spanning 8-12 hours, and attend a bi-annual Mass Care evening meeting.

The minimum age for this opportunity is 18 years old.
