New Horizons Ministries is a multicultural organization whose mission is to be in relationship with homeless and street involved young people, serving and loving in the way of Jesus, equipping them to leave street life. The staff of New Horizons, both paid and volunteer, establish relationships with youth through street outreach as well as by providing meals, clothing, and other emergency services. New Horizons also provides case management, relational counseling, recreational activities, job mentoring, life discovery classes, and a comprehensive referral system. All of these services are designed to equip youth with the life skills, confidence, and sense of community that are vital for them to successfully exit street life. The Life Discovery Program exists to give the youth a vision for life beyond the streets by helping them discover their natural skills and life passions; providing supportive opportunities to take risks in learning new things; and building their skill base.
The Life Discovery Program is a way for volunteers and staff to build relationships with youth in a different context. To be intentional about teaching and challenging youth to exit street life by building their natural skills and exposing their life passions. Interacting and relating in a shared activity creates opportunities for conversation to happen around interests and experiences that do not naturally come up in other settings for our youth. ♦ One time LD Instructor: A one time informational presentation or event that inspires our young people to increase their knowledge base and personal interests. ♦ Short Series LD Instructor: A series of classes focused on one topic, providing education along with a new skill set which promotes a vision of life beyond the streets. ♦ Ongoing LD Instructor: A 6 month minimum commitment to teaching/training a specific life skill that builds natural abilities, encourages risk taking and leaves youth with a sense of success and accomplishment. ♦ Potential Classes/Activities: (don't let this list hinder your creative juices) Creative arts, music, theater, photography, workshops, nutrition/cooking, foreign language, computer lab, parenting, finances, spiritual healing, recreation, snow boarding, rock climbing, river rafting, hiking, tournaments, pool, chess, bowling.
