"How the West is Won" in Interlaken/Boren Park

Interlaken Park's long narrow 60.10 acre forested natural area divides North Capitol Hill (south) and the Montlake neighborhood to the north. Early planners such as the famed Fredrick Law Olmsted Landscape Architects recommended English Ivy plantings for areas of the park to stem effects of erosion. Little did they know or understand the consequences of their actions. Ivy inevitably would have entered into the park (as it does today considering outside garden influences), and as urban forest park stewards we will have to manage Interlaken and other parks indefinitely.
To date The Friends of Interlaken Park have removed roughly 7 or more miles of English Ivy since 2003! Our goal for Interlaken Park is have it free of this ivy and restored by 2025, can we do it?
The Friends of Interlaken Park: Seattle's Urban Forest Stewards constitutes everyone; from each of you to the U of W Sustainable Landscape Classes, the Washington Native Plant Society stewards, Seattle Parks Urban Forestry Dept. and Cascade Land Conservancy "The Green Seattle Partnership," as well as many others who over many years have contributed untold hours of sustaining efforts toward restoring Interlaken Park!
Projects and events in ivy removal, replanting and amending sites benefit by the participation of large groups of 12 or more volunteers in unison to help us keep ahead of this ivy threat. Removing non-native invasive vegetation remains our main objectives, but also restorations of sites cleared of invasive materials as well as implementing erosion techniques, planting and moving tons of mulching materials needed to complete projects. Afraid to say this is hard labor intensive work, but seeing our objectives and goals pay off becomes our just reward!
Volunteers: no experience is necessarily, although having done this type of work before and or a gardening background does help, and of course your love of our urban outdoors in Seattle's natural areas. Working with the land, other people who share and enjoy ivy challenges like these and the fruits of healing. The Friends of Interlaken Park strive to make your participation enjoyable, safe, nourishing with refreshments, foods, the right tools/materials and equipment.
Volunteers are smart: closed toe shoes, tread types, lt. hiking boots, Atlas gloves, bottled water, cell phone, determination and loyalty...
