Help middle and high school students achieve their full potential! Academic coaches work with AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a program designed to help students build their inquiry and study skills. Academic coaches facilitate peer study groups weekly with small groups of students during the AVID elective class. Peer Study Groups provide students with an active learning experience as they ask, explore and answer questions. Academic coaches help students use available resources (lecture notes and books) to help them figure out the answers to higher level questions. Discussions take place during AVID class once or twice a week. AVID academic coaches receive training in inquiry, note taking, and discussion facilitation. AVID volunteers often notice a remarkable difference in student confidence and learning over the course of one school year. As an academic coach, you can truly help students learn to become confident, active learners. This program takes place during the school day during the academic year. Interested people must be able to volunteer at least one hour per week for the duration of the school year. Volunteers attend an orientation before working with students in Bellevue School District. Additional training is provided for AVID Academic Coaches. This opportunity is sponsored by: VIBES
