Southeast Seattle Senior Foundation (a non-profit) operates The Brighton, a 124-unit independent living building for low-moderate income seniors and their families. Many of our residents and neighbors are senior refugees and immigrants, primarily from East Africa. Many had never attended school (before coming to our class.) In partnership with Seattle Central Community College and Muslim Housing Services, The Brighton offers adult (18+) ESL (English as Second Language) classes Monday-Friday, 10AM-12PM, in our beautiful penthouse community space. The instructor provided by SCCC is an excellent teacher, very experienced and wise. We have completed a full year of classes, and are thrilled with the progress our students are making. ***When classes begin again in the fall, we will need a few committed volunteers to help give the beginners the attention they need to succeed. These classes are FUN! The students are delightful and are working hard to learn a new language and customs. Can you help?
Fluent English and sensitivity to cultural diversity is necessary. Experience as an ESL or elementary teacher or classroom assistant would be very valuable, but is not necessary. Free training may be available for committed volunteers. Somali, Oromo, Spanish or other languages may be helpful.
