| Last updated on August 12, 2009 |
The Global Visionaries (GV) EarthCorps work team partners with EarthCorps, a local non-profit environmental restoration organization doing monthly restoration projects in Seattle Parks. Students will perform various tasks including invasive species removal, tree plantings and mulching. The work will be complimented with education and discussions around learning about native plants and restoration techniques in local Seattle parks. The work team will take leadership for GV’s Carbon Emissions Offset project, a series of on-going events planting trees in the city in an effort to create awareness of the benefits of urban trees in combating Global Warming. The GV EarthCorps Work Team (WT) intern will be responsible for supporting the EarthCorps service learning year. This entails coordinating students for their monthly commitments, providing education curriculum to compliment the work that they are doing, and providing assistance as they develop their leadership skills and service ethic. In addition to supporting the work team throughout the year, the EarthCorps WT intern will mentor a GV student who has requested additional support as she/he progresses through his/her leadership year with Global Visionaries. This is an opportunity for the intern to become more closely involved with the GV program as they support students through the sometimes rigorous schedule and fundraising requirements and prepare them for their trip to Guatemala as well as their re-immersion back into the US. Intern responsibilities may include general program support. The position is a 10-hour a month minimum commitment, beginning in September/October 2009 and ending in May 2010, with the Work Team days once a month on Saturdays. There will be three evening trainings in October. The WT Intern is responsible for supporting GV participants, working closely with GV staff, and collaborating with EarthCorps to lead the monthly service projects and education curriculum. This internship is a great opportunity to work with youth around environmental justice issues in a fun and active way! This is an unpaid internship.
The EarthCorps WT Intern should have experience with environmental issues and working with high school youth. A passion and interest for service in our local community is a must. Good communication and organizational skills are also important. This opportunity is sponsored by: Global Visionaries
