Overview of Service and Volunteer Placement
- Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle’s Mission: Through public advocacy, providing services and developing strong business and community partnerships, the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle will strive to empower, enable, and assist African Americans, other people of color and disadvantaged individuals in becoming self-sufficient.
Volunteer Projects:
30 volunteers will partner with the Urban League to landscape the outside grounds of the Urban League’s headquarters. This project will include weeding, clean-up and planting of low maintenance trees, flowers, and shrubs. # of volunteer spots: ~30
- North West African American Museum: is a vibrant community gathering place, a place where youth, adults and families can honor the past and articulate the future. The Museum documents and exhibits the unique historical and cultural experiences of African Americans in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. The Museum is a generative institution capturing history and culture as it occurs, synthesizing what it means for today and tomorrow.
Volunteer Projects:
130 volunteers will partner with North West African American Museum painting 47 murals that represent the rich cultural of this community. The murals will be displayed around the grounds of the museum. 30 additional volunteers will support the Museum by landscaping the outside grounds; weeding, clean-up and planting low maintenance trees, flowers and scrubs. # of volunteer spots: ~160
- Islamic School of Seattle Philosophy: We emphasize the mercy, compassion and limitless love of Allah (SWT). Students are encouraged to always wonder at Allah’s creation; looking through Muslim eyes at history, math, science and all of human knowledge and to think, as Allah (SWT) has commanded, inquisitively and creatively.
Volunteer Projects:
130 volunteers will partner with the Islamic School of Seattle to restore murals, upgrade the playground and landscape the surrounding property of the school. 20 additional volunteers will support the school by cleaning windows, and carpets, paint removal, and building book cases inside the school. # of volunteer spots: ~50
- Emergency Feeding Program: Our mission is to provide an emergency response to the nutritional needs of people in crisis hunger situations throughout Seattle and King County. We are dedicated to alleviating hunger while providing individuals with resource counseling to help move them towards independence. Our goal is to provide a proactive, non-traditional approach to food assistance that will eventually lead to self-reliance for individuals in need of services. Nearly half of all meals go to children.
Volunteer Projects:
30 volunteers will play a vital role for the Emergency Feeding Program packing food bags, sorting donations, staffing distribution sites, and soliciting food donation and funds through local businesses, civic organization, schools and faith-based communities. # of volunteer spots: ~30
- Japanese Cultural & Community Center of Washington: We are an organization that is committed to preserving, promoting and sharing Japanese and Japanese American culture and heritage. We do so by creating, funding and supporting multi-cultural and intergenerational education which celebrates diversity, art, culture, and language. We are also devoted to preserving Japanese American history and heritage. By honoring both the contributions and challenges of Pacific Northwest Issei and Nisei generations, we offer publications, family legacy projects and the Northwest Nikkei Museum.
Volunteer Projects:
40 volunteers will partner with the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Washington to organize library shelves, paint, and landscape.
10 additional volunteers will help in a beautification project outside the center. # of volunteer spots: ~50
- Washington Middle School: Under the guidance of Principal John Halfaker, Washington Middle School follows the Seattle Public Schools’ mission of, enabling all students to achieve to their potential through quality instructional programs and a shared commitment to continuous improvement.
Volunteer Projects:
50 volunteers will partner with Washington Middle school to kick off a courtyard renovation at the school. # of volunteer spots: ~50
