After-School Tutoring Program Working as a mentor or tutor

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on August 5, 2009

Get involved as a tutor in a community public school! Tutors are trained and placed 1:1 with a student for targeted tutoring assistance and relationship building. We have tutoring 3 days a week, Mon, Tues, and Thursday for 1 hour from 3:30-4:30. I will be there, as the tutoring coordinator, to offer support when needed on all three days.

Assistance may be required with word recognition & decoding, vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension, and writing skills. Basic math computation, reasoning, and vocabulary could also be covered. Reading stories aloud and helping with homework are other possible activities. Every effort is made to support the tutor-tutee relationship by keeping the 1:1 relationship, consistent tutoring days during the week, and having sessions to assist with developing the skills of the tutor.

Youth and Senior volunteers are welcome. This is a service-learning opportunity.

There is an application & background check (Washington State Patrol - WATCH Online System), orientation, and training sequence for beginning tutors by the Tutoring Program Coordinator. Other opportunities to develop tutoring skills are strongly encouraged; such as the All City Tutor Training Sessions. Youth volunteers must be middle school ages and older.
