Like Hanging Out On Your Front Step -- Volunteering at NSFC Leaves You With A "Neighborly" Feeling
 |
I am a multimedia instructor who volunteered at the North Seattle Family Center as a Computer for Kids instructor. I heard about the volunteer opportunity from a friend, who was looking for someone to teach some of the clients' children basic word processing skills.
The children in the class are nothing short of phenomenal. They absorbed introductory computer science in about two days, and their interest in the class took them much farther than "Word" and surfing the net. In the final weeks of the class, they tackled a journalism project and even a short digital film!
When I first started at the center, I was apprehensive, because I had never taught children before. However, teaching children turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had. Children, I observed, arrive at computer class excited by technology. Their prejudices and fears towards computers exist only if introduced by adults. Thus, the beginning of the course was actually easier than teaching adults, because none of my students had any "hangups". When I asked the kids what they wanted to do, I heard everything from "build a webpage" to "make a movie"! The class was refreshing for me, because my students placed no limits on their abilities or the toughness of the course content.
Not only was the class phenomenal, but the North Seattle Family Center, itself, is a vibrant little community, full of energy. After working there a few weeks, I started to really look forward to my volunteer position. The center is safe, positive space for local families to get resources, referrals, use a computer, or just a constructive place for kids hang out (the kids' activities are endless: golf, ASL classes, cooking, knitting, arts and crafts...) There is always something going on at NSFC, and the place is just brimming with a "contagious" positive energy. You'll see parents "hanging out" in the hall, kids playing in the courtyard, and locals grabbing brochures or snagging some time on the community PCs. At NSFC, there is a space for everyone.
If you are interested in volunteering, I highly recommend a "drop-in" visit to see Derek, the Volunteer Coordinator, and then chat up some of the folks in the Center. You'll feel immediately welcome. posted by bumby on July 31, 2004 |
