Volunteer Opportunity Details:

As little as one or two hours per week can make a difference in the life of a child. The Skyway Tutoring Center is seeking volunteers to work with children in grades K-8 on a one-to-one or very small group basis,during the school year. Tutors will help children to develop basic reading, writing and math skills, as well as general study and social skills. This is an opportunity to be a positive role model and to develop healthy relationships in a multi-cultural setting. Court-ordered community service volunteers are accepted. Get involved as a tutor, and give yourself a great big hand for caring about kids.

Basic reading, writing and math skills are a must, as are patience and ability to communicate with children. Basic computer skills are a plus, but not a necessity. References and a Washington State Patrol background check are required. Orientation and ongoing training are provided throughout the year. The minimum age for this opportunity is 15 years and older.

Directions:

From Seattle: Take 1-5 South and take the Martin Luther King exit towards Renton. At the first traffic light, turn left onto 129th. Go one block and turn left at the 4-way stop. Go up a hill and at the crest, follow the curve to the right, past Campbell Hill school. This street changes numbers several times as it follows the contour of the hill, but continue on until the road forms a T with Renton Avenue. Turn right onto Renton Ave, and immediately get into the inside lane. We are located in Skyway United Methodist Church, which is a short distance from the intersection on the left side of the street. From Renton: From Rainier Avenue, turn north (uphill) onto Renton Avenue. Continue on Renton Avenue through the Skyway business district.
