Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on October 19, 2009 |
Tutor an elementary school student one-on-one (1st-5th grade). This opportunity is a great way to develop mentoring skills and have a meaningful and impacting relationship with a young child. We focus on homework and improving academic skills such as reading, math, and composition. Occasionally, we also facilitate fun group activities to promote learning outside of traditional education, such as gardening, art, science experiments, and more! Regardless, the emphasis is on fun and exciting ways to learn! This program meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30, October 19 through May 26. Volunteers can choose to come Mondays, Wednesdays or both. We expect a minimal time commitment of three months for regular tutors, though you can also sign up as a substitute. Training: Volunteers will need to attend a one hour training session, and are encouraged to attend one of the All-City Tutor Trainings provided by the Seattle Tutoring Coalition. Background check: Washington State law requires that FamilyWorks secure a criminal history background check on all prospective employees and volunteers. This opportunity is sponsored by: FamilyWorks Family Resource Center & Food Bank

Overall Experience

Board Experience
 |
I currently serve on the FamilyWorks Board of Directors and find that we are able to balance meeting the needs of the North Seattle community and have fun at the same time. I strongly encourage people to volunteer at the food bank or family resource center...or join the board! It will be a very valuable experience. posted by decaman on May 31, 2003 |
