Increase the resources that low-income King County residents have to provide for their families and care for their children. Join the Bridge to Basics Volunteer Team.
In Washington, there are many resources available to help people who are low-income or who are struggling financially. Unfortunately, most people do not realize that they are eligible for services that can help. In fact, did you know that, in King County, only 66% of those eligible for food stamps are claiming them?
Families and individuals who have to choose between paying rent and buying groceries don't know that there is a safety net available to them. We want to change this!
In September, United Way of King County will launch a campaign to get people signed up for the work supports that can help them. Our Bridge to Basics volunteers will be stationed in the community to connect folks with money-saving services such as Basic Food (food stamps), Basic Health (low-cost health care), and utility assistance (reduction in utility bills).
You can be a part of our Bridge to Basics volunteer team! We are looking for volunteers who…
…are available for 2 hours a week from October until December
…are outgoing and friendly
…have basic computer skills
…preferably can speak a second language (Spanish, Chinese, East African languages)
…want to help people!
Bridge to Basics volunteers will receive one day of training covering:
- Eligibility rules for each major type of public benefit
- Myths about benefits
- How to inform clients about benefits
- How to complete each type of benefit application
Training will be held at the United Way of King County office at 720 2nd Avenue in downtown Seattle in January. Lunch will be provided. All Bridge to Basics volunteers will be certified as a benefits screener and supported by a benefits expert.
Bridge to Basics volunteers can select a shift at locations throughout King County, including the east side and south end. Many shifts are available, including weekend and evening hours.
