SEATTLE CARES MENTORING MOVEMENT is a call to action to African-American adults to put his or her hand on a vulnerable young person’s shoulder and rise to the challenge of creating a lasting positive impact on their lives.
SEATTLE CARES MENTORING MOVEMENT is not a mentoring program, it is a mobilization of men and women who are committed to mentoring young people to connect them with mentoring organizations desperately needing more mentors.
SEATTLE CARES MENTORING MOVEMENT is part of the NATIONAL CARES MENTORING MOVEMENT whose mission is to create a highly visible and effective national mentoring campaign targeting the African American community.
The lead agency for this campaign is the 4C Coalition in partnership with several local organizations: Big Brothers/Big Sisters Puget Sound, CASA, Casey Family Programs, Community for Youth, DSHS, Jazz in the City, Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration, Martin Luther King County Labor Unions, The Greater Seattle Chapter of The Links Inc., Seattle Public Library, United Way of King County, Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle and Washington State Mentors. Community leaders supporting the effort include Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen, Councilman Larry Gossett, Rev. Steve E. Baber, other clergy, and other mentoring programs.
TAKE ACTION!
Outcomes for youth of color are worsening - especially for African-American youth. Young people face high dropout and incarceration rates, teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, homelessness, illiteracy, and more. We must communicate to our young people in crisis that the Black community loves and values them and is committed to helping them.
Register Your Mentoring Program
The SEATTLE CARES MENTORING MOVEMENT is focused on providing mentoring programs/opportunities for our most vulnerable African-American youngsters. We encourage mentoring, faith-based, civic, professional and community organizations with programs serving our young people to register their programs on the United Way of King County Volunteer Center site and MENTOR’s National Mentoring Database.
