Description:
New Hampshire Hospital is a state run,not for profit hospital, located in Concord, NH, providing a range of specialized diagnostic and therapeutic psychiatric services for children, adolescents, adults and the elderly in need of acute, transitional or extended care. Services are provided as part of an integrated statewide delivery system and in an environment devoted to the discovery and dissemination of information.
History:
In 1842, New Hampshire Asylum for the Insane opened its doors for the care and treatment of individuals with mental illnesses for the State of New Hampshire. Services were originally offered in a single Main Building in Concord. Over the years the size of the institution escalated to include numerous buildings spread over a 123 acre campus. The patient population peaked at 2,700 in the mid 1950's. With the development of medications which helped suppress symptoms of mental illness, a fledging network of community programs evolved across the state in the 1960's. By the mid 1970's those community programs were serving the majority of the people needing mental health services and the State Hospital downsized dramatically.
