Many elders respond to the fear of falling by restricting activities. This restriction can lead to de-conditioning and an increase in the risk of falling. It can also compromise social interaction and increase the risk for isolation, depression and anxiety.
To combat this vicious circle, an 8-session, bi-weekly group program called Matter of Balance was developed. Subjects who completed the program demonstrated reduced fear of falling, increased confidence in managing falls, increased level of intended activity, increased mobility control and enhanced social behavior.
This volunteer opportunity will provide you the training to offer Matter of Balance classes in your local community to help elders overcome their fear of falling.
Volunteers will be trained as volunteer lay leaders to (1) conduct at least two 8-session Matter of Balance programs for 10-15 participants at each session; (2) to help in demonstrating and monitoring a variety of exercises to stimulate strength, coordination, flexibility and balance; (3) provide input for class discussion in recognizing fears and strategies to avoid falling;
(4) provide ongoing support for class members by conducting periodic follow-up calls during the first 12 months following classes.
