Virginia Tech created a new volunteer program called VT-ENGAGE to encourage volunteerism and enhance the relationship and partnership efforts between the university and the community.
United Way and VT-Engage are community partners in an effort to match volunteers with organizations needing volunteer help by utilizing an online system called Volunteer Solutions. You can use Volunteer Solutions to find volunteer opportunities and/or post the volunteer needs of your group.
Volunteers: We encourage you to register and complete a volunteer profile so you can receive email alerts about opportunities you would like. Click here to register.
Non-Profits: Register your group's volunteer and donation needs so you can receive email alerts about matches to help you. Agencies and organizations, click here to register.
VT-ENGAGE reaffirms Virginia Tech's commitment to service worldwide and helps people actively live out its motto, Ut Prosim, That I May Serve – established in 1896.

Child/Family Foster Care Program For NRV
Our mission is to provide services to make a positive difference in the lives of children & families so that they can achieve their highest potential.
Description:
Foster Families Needed! In the New River Valley, there are 170 children in foster care but only 30 families within Department of Social Services to provide a loving home. When children come into foster care, the Department of Social Services hopes to place them in their local community. Unfortunately, there are not enough families in our area to accomplish our goal. Many children are uprooted from their known environment and placed in a different locality causing the child to experience more of a sense of loss than they have experienced already. Children need a home where they can be nurtured with care and love. Unfortunately, not every child gets the proper care he or she needs. Due to abuse, neglect, abandonment, or a family death in a child’s home, courts sometimes decide that children must be temporarily separated from families. These children come from all cultural and economic backgrounds and may be from our own neighborhoods and communities. We are looking for people who can make a commitment to these children and their families. Please consider helping us by becoming a foster parent. If you are not able to foster children at this point in your life, you could consider helping us recruit families. Flyers are constantly being hung in churches, libraries, gas stations, grocery stores, hair salons, etc. However, we need help displaying the flyers throughout the NRV. Another opportunity with Social Services would be gathering donated suitcases or duffel bags or creating hygiene bags for when children are removed from their parents. The hygiene bags are provided to teens when they enter foster care, and it would be helpful to have items such as hairbrushes, shampoo, fragrant soaps/lotions, and facial soap/products. We have many opportunities for you to serve children and families in our community. If you want to help a vulnerable child by volunteering with our program, please call.
