To engage persons 55 and older in volunteer service to meet critical community needs; and to provide a high quality experience that will enrich the lives of volunteers.
Description:
By investing from four to forty volunteer hours per month, a volunteer can be a key contributor to help solve problems in our community. RSVP volunteers serve in more than 750 projects sponsored and managed by local non-profit agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Locally, RSVP volunteer opportunities are available in Polk, Dallas and Warren counties.
RSVP volunteers use their life experiences to change the community and the lives of people in central Iowa. RSVP volunteers help build affordable housing, help with blood drives, provide mediation services for small claims cases, distribute food to the hungry, mentor children, teach 5th graders the art of public speaking, provide income tax assistance, collect and display new and used household goods and clothing, provide transportation to the homebound, provide intake services for veterans, provide information to seniors about investment fraud and so much more.
Volunteers 55 years old and over who enroll in RSVP are eligible for mileage and meal reimbursement.
History:
United Way of Central Iowa has sponsored the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) since 1972. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program receives major funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service and United Way of Central Iowa.
