Head Start and Early Head Start are comprehensive child development programs which serve children from birth to age five, pregnant women and their families. The programs are child-focused and have the overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young children in low-income families.

Description:
Drake University Head Start is the largest Head Start in the state of Iowa and serves Polk, Warren, Jasper, Marion, Boone and Story counties. Drake University Head Start serves pregnant women and children birth through three through the Early Head Start program and children ages three and four and their families through the 3 and 4 year-old preschool program.

History:
Head Start began in 1965 as one of the War on Poverty programs. Now in it's 40th year, Head Start continues the long tradition of delivering high quality services designed to foster the healthy development of low-income children.
