The purpose of the State Historical Society of Iowa is to connect generation to generation -past, present and future. To help Iowans comprehend who they are and what they can become. The SHSI serves as a trustee of Iowa's historical legacy and an advocate for understanding Iowa's past.

Description:
The State Historical Building contains the State Historical Museum, the Historical Library and Archives, the Historical Preservation Department, the State Arts Council and the office for the Department of Cultural Affairs. As a trustee of Iowa's historical legacy, SHSI identifies records, collects, preserves, manages and provides access to Iowa's historical resources. As an advocate of understanding Iowa's past, SHSI educates Iowans of all ages, conducts and stimulates research, disseminates information, and encourages and supports historical preservation and education efforts of others throughout the state.

History:
The State Historical Society was founded in Iowa City in 1857. The State Museum was built in Des Moines in 1894. In the 1987, SHSI moved to a new museum west of the Capitol. In 1992, The Department of Cultural Affairs was reorganized to administer the State Historical Society and its bureaus and the Iowa Arts Council.
