Big Brothers Big Sisters Of Central Iowa
Mission: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa champions mentoring - connecting our youth with role models for proven, positive results. Purpose: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa's purpose is to provide positive role models for at-risk youth in our communities.
Description:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa's (BBBSCI) purpose is to provide positive role models for at-risk youth in our communities. BBBSCI has always been a leader in developing and sustaining mentoring relationships. The organization accomplishes this by pairing children with volunteers for role modeling, guidance, support, and, most importantly, friendship. The relationship that develops between the matches help children grow into adulthood with the self esteem and skills necessary to be productive citizens. BBBSCI's two primary mentoring programs are:
- The Community Based Program: long-term matches between a mentor or team of mentors and a child
- The School Based Program Program: matches taking place at a school for the duration of a school year
In the past year, in all programming, BBBSCI served 955 children in matches with volunteer Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Big Duo and Big Families. A large percentage of the children served come from single-parent households.
History:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa (BBBSCI) has been in the Des Moines area almost 37 years. In 1996 a branch office was opened in Newton. Since 2003 a satellite office in Ottumwa has served that area of the state, with a fourth satellite office in Indianola-- to more effectively service the Warren County area. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa is affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Approximately 1.2% of funds raised by BBBSCI goes to the national organization, leaving 98.8% of annual income available for direct use in central Iowa.
