The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Description:
The American Red Cross provides assistance to families in times of disaster, such as a fire, flood or tornado. Assistance with shelter, food, clothing and emotional support are included. The Red Cross acts as the communication link between families back home, and members of our armed forces. The organization also provides training in CPR, first aid, automated external defibrillator, and babysitting. Local children learn to swim through Red Cross swimming lessons, and we also provide lifeguard training. Disease Prevention Education courses give individuals tools in how to make healthy lifestyle choices.

History:
The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton in 1881. The Central Iowa Chapter was chartered in 1916, and serves residents of Polk, Warren, Dallas, Madison, and Marion Counties. Eleven adjoining counties are also served by the Chapter.
