4-H After School Clubs for Young Men provide skill building experiences and leadership opportunities for middle school aged young men 2 hours each week. Adults work with club members to explore learning in areas that club members are interested in.

The weekly clubs are facilitated by one 4-H staff member from ISU Extension and one teacher from the host school site. The weekly agenda includes a vigorous and fun physical activity, a nutrition lesson and snack, small group discussion, and a large group activity. Adventure-based and experiential education, project completion, service learning will be the primary educational methods for facilitating the large group activities. Each group will take several field trips throughout the year.

The clubs meet one time each week from approximately 3:00-5:00 pm.

We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to do any of the following:

  1. Teach young men how to do a project in an area (such as bike repair, woodworking, art, etc.). (2-10 hours)
  2. Speak to young men about their career choice and what they do for their job. (2-10 hours)
  3. Offer a tour of their building where they work.
  4. Work with the young men monthly/weekly at a site of their choice.

Sites for 4-H After School for Young Men groups include:
•Southeast Polk Junior High
•Woodside Middle School (Saydel)
•Merrill Middle School (Des Moines)
Weeks Middle School (Des Moines)

4-H volunteers have a sincere interest in the safety and well-being of youth. ISU Extension, Polk County will provide training that will help the volunteer meet the needs and interests of group members.
