Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on November 3, 2009

The holiday season is approaching and the spirit of giving is in the air. Volunteering in your
community is a gift that keeps giving all year long. The City of Des Moines has some community
service opportunities that benefit residents in need. The Community Services Division
needs helping hands for the Holiday Food Project and the Crisis Fund. Every year the Holiday
Food Project provides over 1,000 households with food baskets for the holidays. Volunteers
and city staff spend hundreds of hours packing boxes and distributing the baskets. Delivery is
available to elderly or disabled households who have no other means of transportation. Call
515-283-4180 to volunteer. You can also mail a cash donation or drop off non-perishable food
items to Community Services Division at 602 Robert D. Ray Drive.
Another way to give is to make a donation to the Crisis Fund which provides financial
assistance to residents in emergency situations. Contributions are accepted year round.
Request for crisis assistance funds are made through the Community Services site offices
and are distributed on a need basis.
The Community Services site offices located throughout Des Moines are direct avenues
to serving your community. Contact the Community Services Division at 515 283-4180 or
send emails to communityservices@dmgov.org for more information. Contributions by check
should be made payable to City of Des Moines Community Services Fund or Holiday Food
Project and mailed to Community Services Division, Armory Building 602 Robert D. Ray
Drive, Des Moines, Iowa 50309
