Class volunteers assist children with special needs as they learn to ride horses. They help them in the barn with grooming and tacking procedures. In the arena, volunteers serve as either horse leaders or sidewalkers while the students ride. Classes meet once a week and last for about an hour. They are offered Monday-Saturday for both daytime and evening sessions. Daytime classes are brought out from schools in Elkhart County. Evening and Saturday morning sessions are made up of individual students brought out by their families. Volunteers commit to helping for at least one semester. The Spring semester runs January-May and the Fall semester runs September-December. Subs are also needed for that time period if you cannot commit to being here every week. Riders receive many benefits from therapeutic horseback riding such as: increased attention span and memory, improved balance and coordination, improved social interaction skills, strengthened muscle tone, advances in speech, and fine and gross motor skills development.
All volunteers will take part in a 2.5 hour training session to help with classes. Horse knowledge is not required since they will learn how to groom, tack, and work with the horses and students at the training. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and able to walk for at least one hour to help in classes. This opportunity is sponsored by: LoveWay, Inc.
