Agency Details:
Community SOLUTIONS Of El Paso
Community SOLUTIONS was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 2004 to fill social service gaps in our community. Our mission is to "strengthen community by strengthening children, youth and families to achieve their highest potential to become valuable and valued members of the mainstream community." Phone: 915-861-7733.
Description:
Community SOLUTIONS' primary service is providing specialized services to the prison-family, through "Connections." Children of prisoners are at extraordinary risk for school drop out; substance abuse and early delinquent behaviors leading as many as 70% into prison themselves. Most prison-families live in poverty and despair. "Connections" programming offers prison-families hope, encouragement and direction during a most difficult time in their lives. The "Connections" program provides one-on-one mentoring, and a wide range of group mentoring experiences, as well as academic support and through "Connections KASA" specialized services to those children having parents who are addicted to chemical substances. A Careakers support group is available to those caring for children enrolled in the "Connections" program. Phone: 915-861-7733
History:
Founded in 2002 by two social workers experiencing difficulties referring children to needed services, Community SOLUTIONS was established to fill social service gaps throughout the community. The organization was incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit agency in October of 2003, initially providing services to those among the most marginalized and disenfranchised in our community, on a volunteer basis. In 2004, the agency received a substantial grant from the Administration for Children and Families to establish the "Connections" program solely as a mentoring program for children of prisoners. Very quickly it was realized that because children of prisoners experience simultaneously all factors placing any child at risk for troubled behavior, one-on-one mentoring alone would not sufficiently address their exceptionally unique needs. Therefore, the program has purposefully expanded as it becomes increasingly comprehensive to provide additional substantial and effective services for the entire prison-family. "Connections" provides: one-on-one mentoring; group mentoring activities; a 2nd Sunday social; school break camp experiences; a Caretakers Support Group and a specialized group for children having parents who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. Plans are underway to begin services to families experiencing the reintegration of the prisoner family member. For complete information, phone: 915-861-7733.
