El Paso Affordable Housing Credit Union Service Organization
The mission of the El Paso Affordable Housing Credit Union Service Organization (EPAHCUSO) is to empower members of the low-income and underserved community with the ability to develop family wealth and economic and financial stability.
Description:
The El Paso Credit Union Service Organization (EPAHCUSO) has developed community-oriented services that include financial education, promoting savings, housing and credit counseling, foreclosure prevention assistance, pre and post-homeownership education, information on predatory practices, and innovative affordable home mortgage loans through its sister organization, El Paso Credit Union Affordable Housing, LLC. This LLC was formed to develop mortgage products that do not currently service the local market and to provide low-cost program mortgage loans, thereby promoting housing opportunities to members in the community who would otherwise be unable to become homeowners. Moreover, to ensure the community focus of these products, the LLC has developed strategic partnerships with Fannie Mae, the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso, HUD, El Paso Empowerment Zone, the City of El Paso, and others to provide these services throughout the area. Additionally, the AHCUSO works closely with other mainstream financial institutions to develop financial services that provide low-income families with options to high-cost or predatory loans and wire remittances.
History:
El Paso Affordable Housing Credit Union Service Organization (EPAHCUSO) is a not-for-profit organization formed in 2001 by eight local credit unions; the Greater El Paso Credit Union, First Light Federal Credit Union, West Texas Credit Union, El Paso Area Teachers Federal Credit Union, One Source Federal Credit Union, El Paso Employees Federal Credit Union, Mountain Star Federal Credit Union, and Golden Key Federal Credit Union as a credit union initiative to improve the economic, social well-being, and quality of life of members in the community through financial literacy, savings and providing access to low-cost capital. Its mission is to empower members of the low-income and underserved community with the ability to develop family wealth and economic and financial stability.
