American Red Cross, Colonial Virginia Chapter

The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers, guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Description:
Staff and volunteers of the Colonial Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross provide the following services:

Armed Forces Emergency Services: Staff and volunteers provide a 24-hour emergency communications link delivering messages between immediate family members & service personnel worldwide.

Disaster Services: Staff and volunteers provide 24-hour response to disasters ranging from single-family dwelling fires to major disasters such as hurricanes, floods, ice storms, etc., providing food, clothing, shelter and other emergency needs in addition to educating the community before disasters occur on how to stay safe should a disaster strike.

Health & Safety Services: Staff and trained Red Cross Instructors provide training in first aid, CPR, lifeguarding, swimming, safety training for swim coaches, sports safety training, small craft training, AED training, HIV/AIDS education, blood borne pathogen training, babysitting, blood pressure screening, and instructor training on all levels.

Blood Services: Staff and volunteers work with businesses/civic organizations/churches in our community to schedule blood drives in convenient locations. Volunteers assist at the blood drives at Registration and Canteen services, ensuring that blood donors receive current eligibility information and closely observing blood donors for any possible reaction to their donation.

History:
The American Red Cross was formed in 1881 by Clara Barton. It was the first organization to mount national campaigns for relief of victims of natural disasters, and first organization to respond to needs of U.S. military in combat.

The Colonial Virginia Chapter received its original U. S. Congressional Charter on September 17, 1917; was re-chartered on October 18, 1918 and renamed the James City County Chapter; rechartered in 1981 as the Williamsburg/James City County Chapter; and finally in 1986 was changed to the Colonial Virginia Chapter.
