Swem Library actively participates in the teaching and research missions of the College of William and Mary by providing services, collections, staff and facilities that enrich and inform the educational experience, and promote a lifelong commitment to learning.

Description:
Swem Library is the main library for the College of William and Mary. It is open to the public as well as to the William and Mary community. It supports teaching and research through collections of books, journals, electronic databases, maps, microfilm, audiovisual material, and special collections. Services include instruction, reference, Inter-Library Loan, and media and graphic services. The Special Collections Research Center within Swem collects and preserves millions of pages of manuscript and archival material, as well as thousands of photographs, more than 40,000 rare books, and other items. The Media Center has become a hotbed of film and audio production and use. Swem sponsors exhibits, book talks, film series, and other events open to the public.

History:
For much of William and Mary's history, the Library was in the Wren Building. In 1909, Tucker Hall opened as the College's first dedicated library building. In 1966, Swem Library opened, replacing Tucker as the main campus library. It has since undergone several expansions and a major renovation.
