South Whidbey Youth Connection
The South Whidbey Youth Connection is a nonprofit organization dedicated to youth development. Our mission is to: • Provide youth with essential social, academic, individual, and environmental supports. • Invite youth to engage in challenging, enriching and creative activities, in partnership with peers, adults, and the wider community. • Empower youth to develop leadership and life skills which create pathways to healthy decision-making and meaningful community engagement. • Organize and mobilize community resources for the prevention of youth substance abuse and violence.
Description:
SWYC provides drug- and violence-free activities for South Whidbey teens. We operate The Hub, an after-school drop-in center for middle and high school youth; the Youth Leadership Council, a group of high school youth who plan activities; the Tutor/Mentor Program in Langley Middle School; and Seeds of Change, a group of community members dedicated to keeping our communities drug-free.
History:
In 1989, a grassroots group of parents, teachers, school counselors and health care professionals banded together to advocate and create programs to meet the needs of middle school and high school youth on South Whidbey. Over the past 19 years, the organization they started has thrived and expanded, serving thousands of youth and community members through an evolving menu of increasingly effective programs and activities. Today we are the South Whidbey Youth Connection.
