Volunteer Action Center

Elder Help Of North Idaho, Inc.
Agency Details:
The goal of ElderHelp is to help the elderly in our community to remain independent in the comfort and safety of their own homes. Volunteers give of their time to accomplish projects that affect the safety and health of those who qualify for ElderHelp. The needs of our Elderly deserve to be tended to, first and foremost by relatives and friends. But where there is a lack in these areas ElderHelp was designed to help out.
Description:
ElderHelp is funded by donations from individuals, and businesses along with fundraising activities. Volunteers attend meetings where applicants and their needs are discussed. Those projects with the most pressing safety concerns are chosen first with other requests assigned a priority based on need. We repair roof leaks, floors that present a safety hazard, minor plumbing leaks, install various types of handrails and fix or replace locks on windows and doors. In addition we will help maintain or install smoke detectors, do minor furnace maintenance, provide fire wood, and do weather-stripping. Two new programs that ElderHelp has recently started are providing and installing wheelchair ramps and our Elder Companion Program.
History:
Elder Help of North Idaho was conceived in 1995 as a Coeur d’Alene Association of Realtors, grass roots project to Help the Elderly in our community. It ran its course for about 10 months and then lost its leadership.
Elder Help was restarted in 2005 by The Coeur d’Alene Association of Realtors, then went on to become a local, community wide volunteer organization as a non-profit 501c3 in 2006.
Since that time it has grown in all areas - from an increase in volunteers, to the types of projects we do, to the people whose lives we touch weekly. As our Motto says…we are about "Being a Blessing on Purpose".
