Description:
Kootenai Humane Society (KHS) is a non-profit organization funded exclusively by grants, donations fees for services and its retail efforts. We receive numerous homeless animals everyday. We shelter, feed and provide medical care for these animals while searching for loving homes for them. As a no-kill shelter, animals who are in our facility do not face a "be adopted quick or else" ultimatum, but rather are cared for until they can be placed. On rare occasions, if an animal is deemed vicious or is ill beyond our means to care for it and when euthanzia is the most humane choice, the animal may be euthanized.

History:
KHS was formed in the early 1970s by a group of dedicated animal lovers. They built our current shelter in 1979, and since then KHS has grown to an organization that cares for about 70 dogs, 70-125 cats (the only organization in the county to care for cats), and numerous other animals. Today, the organization has a staff of about 24 part and full-time employees over 335 active volunteers and a budget of just over $1million annually.
