Are you a good researcher? Do you enjoy analyzing information and explaining it to others? Are you comfortable using the internet?

Counseling Volunteers for SHIBA receive ongoing training about the sometimes overwhelming choices for Medicare beneficiaries. Our volunteer counselors provide face to face, unbiased counseling about options for prescription drug coverage, Medigap, Medicare Advantage plans, and other ways of covering healthcare costs in the Medicare program. It is a rewarding feeling to have someone come to an appointment feeling like they will never be able to afford their healthcare and to have them leave an hour later feeling like they understand where and how they can balance their costs.

Our volunteers can also be trained for Outreach. Because of the complexity of the Medicare program, it is often necessary to provide a variety of formats for beneficiary learning opportunities. Some volunteers thrive at attending health fairs, creating presentations to local groups, and being a knowledge resource for area residents.

Some volunteers choose to specialize in Advocacy. Advocates help those who have problems with billing or who have complaints about their Medicare insurance company. These people receive training and support geared toward billing policies and proper procedures. These volunteers often have the privilage of seeing Medicare beneficiaries save or be refunded significant amounts of money and empower beneficiaries to stand up for their rights!

Our volunteers need to have a basic understanding of computer use and be comfortable navigating the internet. They should be comfortable using a variety of communication skills to reach elderly and disabled clients. SHIBA volunteers require ongoing training about Medicare insurance.
