Montana Youth Homes
The mission of Montana Youth Homes is to enhance the quality of life by expanding opportunities for our youth in a secure, family environment. We wish to empower, encourage and support our youth in change in order to become effective, contributing adults.
Description:
Montana Youth Homes oversees the Jan Shaw Youth Home for girls and the Margaret Stuart Youth Home for boys. Both homes provide shelter and group home care for youth ages 12-17. We provide 24-Hour supportive staff, recreation programs and life skills training in a home environment with consistency and structure.
History:
Services have been provided to Helena and Montana’s youth by what is now known as Montana Youth Homes since 1974. Montana Youth Homes Inc. is the result of merging several local group homes serving area youth in 1981. The Helena Achievement Place combined with Ewing Place and Last Chance Youth Home to form Helena Youth Resources, which was later renamed Montana Youth Homes. Timeline: December 26, 1975: Center for Achieving Families and Youth, Inc. is formed. September 18, 1981: The Center for Achieving Families and Youth, Inc. becomes Helena Achievement Place Inc. 1985: Rocky Mountain Development Council assumes Ewing Place and Last Chance Youth Home 1986: Helena Achievement Place assumes Ewing Place, Last Chance Youth Home January 8, 1987: Helena Achievement Place becomes Helena Youth Resources Inc. September 1, 1993: Helena Youth Resources Inc become Montana Youth Homes Inc. 1994: The Margaret Stuart Shelter is built at 200 Miller Street and replaces Ewing Place. August 1995: Jan Shaw retires and the Last Chance Youth Home is renamed the Jan Shaw Youth Group Home December 1996: The Achievement Place is closed.
