Lewis And Clark County Breast And Cervical Health Program
The mission of the Montana Breast and Cervical Health Program is to reduce breast and cervical cancer morbidity and mortality among Montana women by providing ongoing quality screening services and education in a manner that is appropriate, accessible, cost effective, and sensitive to women’s needs.
Description:
The Lewis and Clark Breast and Cervical Health Program is a contracted site with the State of Montana Breast and Cervical Health Program. The local contracted site provides one on one outreach as well as outreach to physicians to enroll as many eligible women as possible into the program. Enrolled women are eligible to receive free annual exams with their doctors as well as free mammograms. If further diagnostic services are needed, those are paid for as well. The program also provides education on breast self-exams and the importance of annual cancer screenings. Women who are enrolled in the program and diagnosed with cancer are referred to a Medicaid treatment program to pay for their treatment.
History:
The Montana Breast and Cervical Health Program started approximately 13 years ago when Congress passed a law that provided funding for low-income, uninsured women to receive breast and cervical cancer screenings. The State program then contracted with local health departments to provide the one on one outreach to eligible women and to manage each woman's enrollment, assisting her to enroll, making sure that she has all of her appointments, and making sure that everything is paid for. Each year the goals for the number of women for each local site to screen increases as we try to help more and more women.
