“The JCC: Welcoming All Jews to Grow Together”
Description:
The Jewish Community Center (The J) of Dallas consists of a 173,000 square foot facility, which offers social, recreational, educational and cultural activities for all ages - from toddlers to senior adults. The JCC also serves as a meeting place for community organizations. The mission of the J is to build a dynamic Jewish community by promoting the interests and welfare of the Jewish community at a center where all Jews are welcome; furthering an appreciation and understanding of a shared Jewish heritage; fostering personal growth of its members through cultural, educational, social, recreational, and civic activities; strengthening and enriching Jewish family life; and promoting understanding with and contributing to the common good of the general community.
The J currently serves 7,000 members with Preschool, and Summer Day Camps as well as Adult Education and Senior programs that serve more than 800 senior adults. Its community programs bring thousands of Jews together and offer a variety of events during the course of a year.
In May 2008, the J celebrated the 3rd anniversary of the grand opening of a state-of-the-art natatorium and fitness center, which includes indoor swimming year round for adults; year-round swimming lessons for children and an indoor spray park. Programming also includes extensive and varied personal training, Yoga, Pilates, Spin Classes, Rowbics and Sports Leagues. The JCC is a partner agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas. The Federation allocates a part of the JCC's annual operating budget from its Annual Campaign funds and is also a beneficiary of the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and our Preschool is accredited by the NAEYC. The agency is affiliated with the American Camping Association, Community Council of Greater Dallas and the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America.
The J’s website at www.jccdallas.org offers more information about its facilities and programs.
History:
In 1886 the Dallas YMHA Chapter bought a lot on the corner of Jackson/Ervay Streets dedicated to Social, Moral and intellectual advancement.
After numerous name changes and smaller venues the YMHA built the well known building on Pocahontas Street which served as headquarters for Jewish physical, social and cultural activity in Dallas for 40 years. As times changed and the community moved North, it was decided that a larger more conveniently located building was needed. A site committee went about its task and in April 1954 bought the Northaven Road Campus. By 1958 the outdoor facilities had been completed and on May 6, 1962 the Julius Schepps Community Center was officially opened.
2008 : The Aaron Family Jewish Community Center has grown in size and useage over the years. With over 2800 members, 8 lighted tennis courts, a brand new natatorium, children’s spray park and warm water exercise pool and a 33,000 square-foot Sports & fitness complex (artie do we have to use the medical City official name here) with state-of-the art equipment, spin room, pilates studio, and group ex classes offering the latest fitness craze: Rowbics, and Zumba, the J Sports and Fitness Complex is truly something to be envied.
The J Early Childhood Center, NAEYC accredited preschool offers children ages 12 months – pre-k an exceptional education in a nurturing environment with loving, degreed teachers. This outstanding preschool offers after school enrichment classes, weekly swim lessons for 3 & 4 year olds, and great family activities.
Catch the Camp Spirit all year long at one of our amazing summer camps for children ages 2-15. Happy Day Camp which began over 100 years ago, has transformed into Camp Simchah and Camp Chai where the traditions continue and memories last a lifetime. Sports Camp, Gymnastics Camp, Tennis Camp and Teen Adventure Camps have also evolved into the finest summer camps in Dallas.
The J provides a home away from home for over 750 senior members each year. Over 75 seniors come to the J on a daily basis for cards, senior choir, art class, speakers, lectures and the newest addition wii bowling. Approximately 55 seniors venture out on various day trips each month to art museums, casinos, and theatre shows. 40 energetic seniors leave Dallas for out of city trips to Missouri or even a get away cruise to Belize. Believe it or not, over 500 seniors work out at the brand new Sports & Fitness Complex each week. Over 120 seniors enjoy the Kosher Lunch Program and entertainment each Thursday afternoon in Zale Auditorium. In fact, over 13,000 lunches were served last year—proving that the J really is a second home for these seniors. Finally, over 200 seniors bring in the New Year at the holiday party each year—dancing the night away and proving that you are only as old as you feel.
