History:
In March 1995, the Cancer Support Home opened its doors to the public in a historic home in Fayetteville with one paid staff member, a core group of dedicated volunteers and the vision of offering hope, comfort and resources to cancer patients and their families.
The Cancer Support Home, a service of Washington Regional, is supported by grants from the Cancer Challenge and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, as well as corporate and individual contributions. The Cancer Support Home now has two locations—Bentonville and Fayetteville—with five staff members and nearly 50 volunteers.
The Cancer Support Home provides support services to cancer patients and families in a non-clinical, home-like setting. The Home offers hope, comfort and resources to those seeking assistance in learning to live with cancer. All services of the Cancer Support Home are offered free to patients seeking treatment in Northwest Arkansas.
Education and cancer screenings are extremely important to our mission. Our goals in education are 1) to raise awareness of cancer and address the issues of being a caregiver and friend to those diagnosed with cancer, and 2) to encourage healthy lifestyles following the initiatives set by the American Cancer Society to reduce tobacco use, eat more nutritiously and increase physical activity.
Last year, more than 8,000 people were reached with a Cancer Support Home education message through health fairs or speaking engagements. We have had the opportunity to reach those in our communities of different ages, races, sexes, socioeconomic standings and insurance statuses.
The number of people served through our screening clinics continues to grow dramatically. By offering screening clinics and language interpreters as needed, we are striving to overcome barriers to health care, which can include lack of education, societal influences, and personal beliefs and practices.
Although the number of Cancer Support Home services has increased over the years, the population of Northwest Arkansas has increased at an even greater rate. And, as a regional center for cancer treatment, Northwest Arkansas facilities serve families from Benton, Carroll, Madison and Washington counties, as well as those from Southwest Missouri and East Oklahoma. While it is important to keep up with this growing need for services, the focus of the Cancer Support Home will remain on the individual patient and family and their need for assistance as they make their journey, learning to live with cancer.

Take I-540 to exit 88 (Bentonville/Pea Ridge exit). Go west 1/2 mile. It is an orange brick, ranch-style home on the left side of the road. There is a sign out front that reads "NWA Cancer Support Home." |
