The mission of the American Diabetes Association is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

Description:
To fulfill this mission, the ADA provides diabetes research, advocacy and information/education in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Research efforts focus on studies that have the potential to prevent, control and cure all forms of diabetes. For advocacy, the ADA has both national and state diabetes advocates who lobby for increased scientific research. A team of volunteer attorneys work to help protect the rights of people with diabetes. Common issues may include discrimination in the workplace, school and access to affordable health care. The ADA provides information and education to people with diabetes and their families through publications, health fairs, a bilingual website and toll-free hotline. The ADA also sets the standard of care for the medical community through scientific findings and certification programs.

To support these efforts in Northwest Arkansas, the ADA has an office in Bentonville, which consists of two full-time staff persons who serve as the local diabetes resource to 15 counties. Through several major fundraising events, including Kiss a Pig Gala and Tour de Cure, more than $700,000 is raised annually. These funds go towards research, advocacy, and educational programs such as the Diabetes Health and Wellness Expo and other community health fairs. The local office also has a volunteer Leadership Board made up of key community leaders who serve as advocates for the organization and raise awareness about diabetes.

History:
Founded in 1940, the ADA is the nation's leading nonprofit health organization for diabetes.
