Arkansas Support Network
We provide community based, inclusive supports to individuals with disabilities and their families. All supports are provided in the context of real community--no segregated facilities are used.
Description:
These programs are among the services and supports provided by ASN: Family Support Program: Provides a variety of supports including cash assistance to families who have children with disabilities living in their homes. The purpose is to help families raise their children at home and avoid institutional placement. By supporting families in this way, we help the child, the family, and society. It presently costs over $95,000 per year to house a child in an institution. In contrast, we provide $1,100 per year in cash assistance to over 110 families.
Community Living Services: In our Community Living Services Program, we provide supports and services as needed to allow individuals with disabilities, who would otherwise be candidates for institutional placement, the opportunity to live in their own homes and communities. Services include training in self-help skills and supports which promote inclusion in the community. By providing the supports necessary to allow individuals to live and work in the community, we help society avoid costly and unnecessary institutional costs.
Supported Employment: Our Supported Employment program provides job development, placement and on-going supports for individuals who have disabilities. We strive to assist individuals in finding jobs in the competitive job market, and work with the individual to find a placement that is fulfilling and enjoyable. In addition, we have a statewide program in which we are able to make small loans to individuals who have disabilities who wish to start their own business. By helping those we serve become taxpaying citizens, we not only help them, we have an impact on the whole community.
History:
Arkansas Support Network was established in May of 1988 as Family Support Services, Inc. A small group of parents and volunteers incorporated and were licensed by the state to provide support and assistance to a limited number of families who had children with disabilities living in the home with them. Since 1988, we have added a number of programs and services to complement our original Family Support program. Our guiding principle in 1988 was the belief that individuals who have disabilities and their families should be in control of service delivery. Our job is to assist, not to control. With every service that we have added since 1988, we have tried to adhere to this philosophy.
