Refugee Transitions
Refugee Transitions' mission is to assist refugee and immigrant families in becoming self-sufficient in the U.S. by providing services that help them attain the English language, life, job, and academic skills they need to succeed in their new communities.
Description:
Refugee Transitions currently offers two main programs to refugees and low-income immigrants in the Bay Area:
The ESL Civics Education and Orientation Program is a home-based program that provides English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and civics education to over 150 refugee and immigrant adults each year. Eight-seven percent of the students improve their English proficiency by at least one level after six months of instruction. Students also have consistently achieved learning gains far above the state average according to the California Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS).
The Bridge-2-Success Refugee Youth Development Program is a comprehensive program that provides over 150 youth with the help and opportunities they need to develop supportive relationships with adults and peers, succeed academically, and develop career-readiness skills. RT recruits and trains volunteers to provide personalized tutoring and mentoring for youth and provides individualized case management to ensure youth graduate from high school and continue their post-secondary education.
History:
Refugee Transitions began in San Francisco as the Refugee Women’s Program in 1982. RT grew in response to the large influx of Southeast Asian refugees into the low-income neighborhood of the Tenderloin, and the alarming number of female refugees home-bound by fear, lack of familiarity with the city and its services, and childcare responsibilities.
Since 1990, RT has served over 2,300 clients from around the world and has provided refugee and immigrant families with high-quality, individualized ESL instruction, orientation to life in the Bay Area, academic tutoring/mentoring for youth, and family support. RT currently has offices in San Francisco, Oakland, and Sunnyvale, and is a dynamic, growing organization.
Refugee Transitions’ clients reflect the diversity of the refugee and immigrant experience in the Bay Area. In the past year, we have had clients from countries such as Liberia, Burma, Bhutan, China, Bosnia, Iraq, Yemen, Colombia, Mexico, and Sudan.
