Arkansas Crisis Center
We restore hope, empower people, and save lives through suicide awareness and crisis intervention services for those experiencing crisis in Arkansas.
Description:
Who are we? The Arkansas Crisis Center (ACC) began operation in 1986 as an all-volunteer organization dedicated to combating the rising suicide rate in Northwest Arkansas. Over the past 22 years, our services have broadened and the coverage area expanded. The mission that guides our work: We restore hope, empower people, and save lives through suicide awareness and crisis intervention services for those experiencing crisis in Arkansas. Restoring Hope: Arkansas Crisis Hotline - The ACC operates a statewide crisis intervention hotline. Our hotline is the only one of its kind in the state of Arkansas. Survivors of Suicide Support Group- Survivors of Suicide (SOS) is a nationally recognized program of support, comfort and healing for anyone grieving the loss of someone to suicide. Our SOS group in Northwest Arkansas is “peer lead” and meets regularly on the first and third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CISM (Critical Incident Stress Management) - The ACC coordinates a dedicated group of volunteers to offer a comprehensive crisis response program that covers pre-crisis preparation and on-scene support to post-crisis intervention and mental health referrals as needed. Our CISM services have been offered to schools, churches, business and industry worksites, as well as emergency services personnel. In 2007, the CISM team helped over 100 people work through a traumatic event. Empowering People & Saving Lives: The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the ACC have partnered together to effectively reach more people in need in the state of Arkansas. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline typically receives approximately 200 calls per month from Arkansas residents in crisis. In the past, these calls have been re-routed to other states without access to local Arkansas organizations and resources where these callers could seek help and additional assistance. Suicide Prevention Training has been offered in various schools, agencies and the public free of charge for the past 20 years. Participants learn the warning signs and risk factors of stress, depression and suicide, the groups at elevated risk, and intervention do’s and don't’s. Our training helps others know exactly how to seek help for potentially suicidal people and what intervention steps they can take immediately on their own.
